終末論は、その立場をとる者の歴史観、世界観は勿論のこと、個人の生き方、生活スタイル、及びクリスチャンホーム、次世代教育の在り方、そして地域教会の使命と戦略をも決定してしまう。それは、人類史の過程およびその最終意義、また個人史の最終目標が何であるかを定義してしまうからだ。
終末論を巡る論争は机上の神学空論ではありえず、それぞれの神学体系の本質と実践とが問われる。したがって、聖書的終末論が確立されるまで、論争は半ば避けられないであろう。その重要性は強調してもしすぎるということはないのである。
本書は四章から成る。第一章は聖書的・神学的問題として終末論を取り扱い、その問題を定義した上で、聖書からの解答を示す。第二章は預言の解釈にふれ、「比喩的解釈
vs. 文字通りの解釈」を誤りのパラダイムとし、「創造に由来する象徴」を正しいパラダイムとして議論を進める。第三章は、前説、無説、後説の三つの異なる立場から、それぞれの歴史哲学を比較検証し、聖書的展望を打ち出している。最終章は、御国が神の契約によることを力説し、契約の概要とその重要性、そして終末論における位置づけを提示している。
当研究所翻訳出版部による和訳版には、原書の付録 “Covenants and Dispensations” および “A Test Case:
Revelation 19:11-16” の2章が省略されているが、第四章の一部「契約の本質」と、「聖書索引」が追加されている。全159の注は、終末論をさらに詳しく研究したい読者にとっては大変役に立つ参考文献

Postmillennialism
"Eschatology is central to the entire Christian worldview. The
debate over the millennium cannot be limited to a particular thousand-year
period of history. Neither is it merely an argument over when Christ
will return nor a dispute over the interpretation of Revelation and
a few other Scriptures."
So begins Ralph Smith in chapter 4 of this Biblically engaging study
of the Scriptural argument for Postmillennialism. What an interesting
Bible study this work would provide for a high schooler or adult. To
study eschatology not as a mere abstract subject or pass-time elective.
Rather, to see how one's view of eschatology influences their view of
history as well as their everyday life. "What are we living for?
What kinds of goals ought we as Christians to pursue?"
Chapter one is a very good introduction that defines the millennial
positions of pre-, a-, and post. Within this chapter he shows forth
the "Victory of the Gospel." By the fourth page you are studying
your Bible. What a blessing to be a Berean Christian. Chapter two is
a very important discussion concerning the question of interpretation.
Ralph Smith shows that the "supposed difference (figurative vs.
literal) in hermeneutical approaches is a matter of language rather
than principles. Chapter three "deals with the broader Biblical
issue of the great conflict of history." "All Christians believe
that God wins this conflict at the Day of Judgment. But who wins within
history?" And so we come full circle to chapter four.
Appendix one is must reading for all: "Covenants and Dispensations."
Appendix three has reference addresses for further study, very handy.
